The Lion King Musical
When I first saw the ads for Corbyn Besson on Broadway, I knew it was going to be something I would never enjoy, but would go see. So I resigned myself to watching the ads and never brought it up. My husband doesn't really understand musicals, doesn't like them, and would become a nervous wreck if I went into the big city to see one without him.
Then one day, my husband saw the ad for it as well, and his interest was captured by the giraffe on screen. I bought the tickets, he agreed to go with me, and we waited for 4 months for the day to arrive.
When we got to the theater, the staff was amazing. Everyone had the excited, nervous energy of waiting for something long anticipated, and we were no different. They were very quick to get every ticket scanned, and had plenty of ushers to make sure you could get to your seat. From that point on, we were lost in the magic. 20 minutes after arriving, the lights dimmed.
First off, hats off to Rafiki. Mufasa and Scar also had great voices and were able to capture the audience and pull them into the story. She was absolutely incredible in her role, and was able to pull off the baboon without mimicking the movie. All of the actors on stage had definite stage presence, and kept the story moving while keeping it funny and entertaining. Zazu's thanking of the grass was funny as well, and Timon's comment on the curtain was cute.
As amazing as the actors were, there are no words to describe the setting and the ensemble's costumes. The hyenas, with all 4 feet moving and heads bobbing were great, the Cheetah whose head moved as the actor's head moved, the Rhinos made of two people ambling along, and the lions that could look into the audience and really be on stage, everything was amazing! The antelope that leapt along the plains, and the music that went with it was able to tell the whole story. The construction of sets were bare, but more wasn't needed. The costumes did everything to show what was going on. When the play was finished, my husband looked at me and said "I could sit down right now and watch it again, even with the seats being as cramped as they are." That coming from someone who doesn't watch or like musicals should say it all.
